Tehran, Nov 19: Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi called on the Islamic Republic today to suspend sensitive nuclear activities which the West suspects are aimed at making bombs.

''Iran should respect UN Security Council resolutions and it means suspending uranium enrichment and resolving the dispute (on the nuclear issue) through talks,'' Ebadi, a leading human rights lawyer, told reporters.

Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful and has repeatedly refused to halt enrichment, a process to make fuel for power plants that can also provide material for bombs.

Criticising the handling of Iran's nuclear policy is sensitive because it is considered a matter of national security. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has branded critics who want Iran to suspend uranium enrichment as ''traitors''.
