New Delhi, Nov 19 (UNI) The government today said it had received requests from the Kerala and Gujarat governments for setting up of satellite campuses of the IIT-Madras and the IIT-Bombay respectively in their states.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, however, said the government had taken a decision that establishment of large satellite campuses with regular Bachelor and Master Programmes would amount to setting up of new IITs and should be avoided.

Ms Purandeswari said the government, however, had no objection to the setting up of small extension centres of existing IITs outside their main campuses, devoted to continuing education, diploma courses, finishing schools and incubation programmes.

The minister gave this information while replying to a question by TDP member N P Durga in the Upper House.
