Chennai, Nov 19 (UNI) The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Government to implement the 19 per cent reservation for SCs and STs and three per cent quota for physically-challenged while filling up vacancies for the post of lecturers and teachers in government colleges and schools.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Mr Justice V Ramasubramaniam passed the orders on two writ petitions filed by one Punithapandian seeking to implement the 18 per cent quota for SC and one per cent quota for ST, and the other filed by Ilangovan of a college in Vellore seeking provision of three per cent quota for physically-challenged, that included one per cent each for blind, deaf and physically-challenged.

The Bench said since the government had already passed orders for filling up 1,000 of the 2,225 vacancies without following the reservation, it should implement the quota system while filling up the remaining 1,225 vacancies.

Of the total 2,225 vacancies, the SC/ST quota constituted 562 vacancies.

The Bench also said the quota for the physically-challenged should be implemented while filling up both the teaching and non-teaching vacancies. The government should issue orders to this effect, the Bench ordered.
