CPI(M) protests against the repealing of ULCRA

Mumbai, Nov 19 (UNI) Activists of the Communist Party of India(M), along with slum-dwellers today protested against the Maharashtra government's decision of repealing the Urban Land Ceiling Regulation Act, ULCRA, at Azad Maidan, here today.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh had announced that the government will take a decision on ULCRA in the Assembly session at Nagpur, that begins today.

General Secretary of CPI(M) Madan Naik said that the repealing of the Act will open up around 23,000 acres of land for the moneyed people, which in fact could be used for providing housing to the poor by the government itself.

Naik further added that if the government decides to repeal the act, it will face a state wide opposition by the CPI(M) and also the slum-dwellers.
