Kathmandu, Nov 18 (UNI) The Nepali Congress today said the party does not favour overthrow of the monarchy as it breaches the interim constitution.

Party's Central Committe member Shekhar Koirala accused political parties, including the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist, of persuading the NC to work against the constitutional provisions.

Stating that the NC would not abolish monarchy violating the constitution, he said it would not be lured even by the post of the first president of the country.

Dr Koirala claimed that the proposals passed by the interim parliament, seeking an immediate arrangement for declaring the country a republic and to adopt a fully proportional representation (PR) system were ''impossible'' to be enforced as it would be against the constitution.

''A two-third majority of the House is needed to amend the interim constitution to enforce the motions which is not possible without the support of the NC, '' Kantipur quoted him as saying.
