Maoists stage nationwide rallies in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nov 18: Maoists staged nationwide rallies today to press the Nepal government to enforce the motions regarding declaration of republic and proportional representation system which were adopted by the interim Parliament.

Maoists had warned of launching an agitation if the Winter Session failed to implement the motions.

A two-third majority in the House is needed to amend the interim Constitution to enforce the motions. This is impossible without the support of the Nepali Congress, which is opposed to the move.

Meanwhile, the seven-party alliance is holding discussions in a last ditch bid for evolving a consensus to implement the motions endorsed by the special session of the interim parliament, before the winter session of the House begins tomorrow, Kantipuronline reported.

Nepali Congress President and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala held discussions with his party leaders at his official residence at Baluwatar this morning.
