Maratha Light Infantry's raising day tomorrow
Kolkata, Nov 14 (UNI) The 17th Battalion of Maratha Light Infantry will celebrate its raising day tomorrow, according to an official release here today.
The battalion, based at Barrackpore Cantonment, is presently commanded by Col S K S Chauhan.
The battalion was raised on October 15, 1941 at Belgium and participated in World War II in Burma. However, after India's independence the battalion was re-raised at Belgium on November 15, 1962.
The release further mentioned about the battalion's contribution in actions against Chinese intrusion at Nathu La, Sebu La and Yak La in 1965.
In 1971, the battalion was deployed at Dharchu La on Indo-China border to check against the Chinese intrusion. The unit has also taken part in Operation Bluestar, Operation Zero Option and Operation Trident.
The unit had also received the Shaurya Chakra, one Yudh Sena Medal, seven Sena Medal and two Vishistha Sena Medal.
UNI
