Varanasi, Nov 13 (UNI) His Holiness XVIIth Gyalwa Karmapa Urgyen Thinley Dudul Dorje blessed a swarm of devouts at the Vajra Vidya Sansthan (VVS) at the world famous Buddhist pilgrimage of Sarnath here.

The Karmapa, who arrived on a week-long academic tour on November 10, blessed the devouts with 'darshan' at the VVS yesterday for an hour from 1100 hrs to 1200 hrs, sources at the monastary told UNI.

The 22-year-old spiritual head of Kagyu Buddhist order, who has been extensively studying at Gyuto Tantric Monastery near Dharamsala after secretly leaving China-ruled Tibet in December 1999, will pursue special studies from his main tutor Khenchen Thrangu Rinponche at the Vajra Vidya Sansthan (VVS) at Sarnath.

''It is an annual exercise where Rinponche, also the founder of the Vajra Vidya Sansthan delivers special lessons of Buddhism to the Karmapa. Last year it happened at Bodh Gaya, but this time it is taking place at the VVS in Sarnath,'' Karmapa's Secretary, Gompo Tsering said.

After week-long study tour, the Karmapa will leave for Bodh Gaya to participate in the Karmai Gunchoe, month-long annual debates of the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism which will start on November 13.
