Naxals shoot down SRPF jawan

Nagpur, Nov 13 (UNI) A State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawan was killed on the spot and a woman received serious injuries when a group of Naxals opened fire at the weekly market in Aheri tehsil in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra yesterday, police said today.

Police have identified the jawan as Shailesh Kamane.

Police said the incident occurred when Kamane and his colleague, both attached to group 2 of the SRPF, had gone to the weekly market to buy vegetables for themselves. It was then that the naxals, who were also present there, opened fire at the two. The sudden fire left the jawans shocked, giving them little time to retaliate. The firing claimed Kamane's life.

In the incident, the woman, identified as Lalita Khobragade, also suffered injuries and is in serious condition. It took place under Permili police sub-division of the district. Soon after killing the jawan, the outfit took away the rifle and other ammunition belonging to them, police added.
