Govt releases 3G spectrum in 2.1 Ghz band

New Delhi, Nov 12 (UNI) The Government today decided to release spectrum for 3G services and WiMax through the process of auctioning which will shortlist three players in Phase-I.

The radio frequency for 3G will be in the 2.1 Ghz band and broadband wireless acess (WiMax) at 2.5 Ghz.

Communication and IT Minister A Raja said the auctioning process will be open to all, which would effectively mean that existing, new and foreign players can bid for the spectrum.

Mr Raja said there is adequate spectrum available for 3G services but said he will not permit merger of the 3G players for five years.

The guidelines for 3G spectrum is currently being worked out, he added.
