Five-day CPI(M) congress begins in Coimbatore on March 29

New Delhi, Nov 12 (UNI) The CPI(M) will hold its 19th Party Congress in Coimbatore from March 29 to April 2, Party General Secretary Prakash Karat announced today.

At the end of the party's two-day Polit Bureau (PB) meeting held at A K Gopalan Bhawan here, Mr Karat said the main agenda of the meet was the finalisation of the dates and preparation of arrangements for the Party Congress.

At a press conference to brief mediapersons on the deliberations of the PB meet, the CPI(M) General Secretary said the outline of the Draft Political Resolution was also discussed on the basis of which the draft would be prepared, to be placed in the meeting of the Party Central Committee's three-day deliberations beginning here on December 20.

Mr Karat said the PB members made a strong case for increasing the Minimum Support Price for paddy to at least Rs 1000 per quintal, the review of ad valorem tax structure and the scale of central excise duties on petroleum products to tackle the situation arising from the rise in oil prices at the international level.

The PB also asked the government to take necessary steps to contain the spiralling price rise, the notification of all the provisions of the Tribals Rights Act and introduction of the Women's Reservation Bill.

It also expressed concern over the imposition of emergency in Pakistan and demonstrated solidarity with the people in their struggle for restoration of democracy there.
