New Delhi, Nov 10: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has resigned from the Lok Sabha, protesting against the violence in Nandigram.

Ms Banerjee faxed her resignation letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee's office from Kolkata, Trinamool Congress sources said today.

The sources said Ms Banerjee in her letter had stated that she was resigning from the Lok Sabha as the Left party cadres had opened indiscriminate firing against peaceful protestors including women and children in Nandigram resulting in the death of several people. While unofficial sources were putting the death toll at around 200 women and children, civil rights activists like Aparna Sen and Medha Patkar were claiming that 50 people had died. Even this is a heavy toll and the Centre has not taken against the West Bengal Government. The State Government deserves to be dismissed for its utter failure to maintain law and order situation.
