Three wanted sharp shooters held after encounter

Jaunpur, Nov 8 (UNI) The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police today arrested three wanted sharp shooters after an encounter here.

Of the three nabbed, one belonging to the notorious Munna Bajrangi gang was wanted in connection with Sant Gyaneshwar's murder in Handia area of Allahabad during the Ardh Kumbh Mela last year.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of some hardened criminals, on way to kill Ram Nagar Block Pramukh Kailash Nath Yadav, police reached the spot and cordoned off the Line Bazar area.

On being challenged, the assailants opended fire and in the ensuing encounter, police arrested the three history-sheeters.

Their accomplices, however, managed to escape.

The accused were identified as Gopal Singh alias Amit alias Pahalwan alias Praveen, Nitin Singh and Amit Singh alias Dabbu, all hailing from Jaunpur.

Gopal is the sharp shooter of mafia don Munna Bajrangi, who is wanted in connection with BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai's assassination in Ghazipur district.

On interrogation, Gopal confessed to the crime and admitted killing six people, including Sant Gyaneshwar.

Nitin is the driver of Munna's brother-in-law Pushpjeet Singh and was also wanted in connection with several heinous crimes.

A pistol, a revolver and two magazines were recovered from their possession.

Meanwhile, rewards of Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,500 were announced by IG (Varanasi) and DIG and SP respectively.
