Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (Baramulla-Kupwara) Dr B Srinivas said the security forces launched a search operation at Sadhpora Mohalla in Pattan area of Baramulla district last evening following tip-off.
When the security personnel reached a particular place, the militants, believed to be seven in number, hurled a hand grenade towards them and followed it with heavy gunfire, he added.
The DIG said the security forces effectively retaliated the fire, resulting in a fierce encounter killing two militants.
A security personnel also sustained injuries in the gunfight, he added.
