British Foreign Secretary for early elections in Pakistan

London, Nov 7 (UNI) British Foreign Secretary David Miliband is to issue a renewed call for beleaguered Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to go ahead with promised elections.

Mr Miliband will make a Commons statement on the latest crisis to erupt in Pakistan following General Musharraf's weekend announcement that he was suspending the constitution and imposing a state of emergency.

''President Musharraf's commitment to resign as chief of the army and hold free and fair elections is one that we think is very important indeed and one we hope to see clarity on very soon,'' Mr Miliband told reporters.

''I think there is no doubt in the corridors of power in Pakistan that the UK is deadly serious about the points that need to be addressed.'' UNI XC SZ BD1804
