BMC intensifies octroi collection drive

Vadodara, Nov 7 (UNI) An attempt to evade octroi duty of a mere Rs 1091 has proved costly, with the Baroda Municipal Corporation now slapping a fine of Rs 12,000 on the company whose goods were being transported in the truck that tried to escape.

Incidentally, octroi duty is scheduled to be abolished with effect from November 15.

The truck was caught by a Baroda Municipal Corporation (BMC) squad today while trying to avoid the duty.

The truck was carrying Diwali gifts and clothes. The octroi that had to be paid was only Rs 1091. But, now, the civic body has slapped a fine of Rs 12,000.

The BMC had recently formed a 28-member squad to check octroi evasion during the festive season.
