Shillong, Nov 7 (UNI) At least three thousand dual voters who had their names registered in the electoral rolls from two constituencies in Meghalaya have withdrawn their names from one of the constituencies, ahead of next year's Assembly elections.

The dual voters came forward to cancel their names after the election authorities warned action against voters who refuse to withdraw their name from one of the two constituencies where they have registered.

''We have deleted three thousand names of people who have dual registration in the electoral rolls of East Khasi Hills and EPIC cards were also returned,'' East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer (RO) B Dhar told reporters here today.

The state election department has identified around 100 names with dual entry in the electoral rolls.

''Registering names from two constituencies is a crime and those found guilty would be arrested,'' Mr Dhar said adding that government employees, found guilty of registering their names from two constituencies, would lose their job besides being jailed.
