Wedding celebrations turn violent, constable killed

Meerut, Nov 6 (UNI) One police constable was killed and six others were injured when a police team, which had gone to rescue a marriage party held hostage by the bride's family, was attacked in Siwalkhas area under Jaani of the district late last night.

The police had gone to free a marriage party which was kept hostage after an altercation between families of bridegroom and bride over a dowry issue.

As per the details there were two Muslim marriages to be solemnised but the occasion turned violent after the family of one of the grooms reportedly demanded a car in dowry. The family members of bride beat up the 'Baraat', including the groom.

On receiving the information, the police team reached the spot but was attacked by the bride's family in which a contable was killed and six others were injured.

''The matter is under probe and the guilty are being questioned,'' the police said.
