Two dead, 10 injured in explosion at Nandigram

Nandigram, Nov 6 (UNI) At least two persons were killed and 10 seriously injured in a powerful explosion near a bridge here today, police said.

East Midnapore District Superintendent of Police S S Panda said the two persons, identified as Tushar Kanti Sau and Nirapada Gatia, were killed on the spot while the injured were rushed to the Nandigram and Tamluk hospitals. The condition of the injured was critical, hospital sources said.

The SP said technical experts were called to ascertain whether it was a bomb explosion or a landmine.

Meanwhile, the Bhhumi Ucchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and CPI(M) supporters continued their exchange of fire since last night at Nandigram, Khejuri, Ranichak, Takapura and Satengabari areas, the SP said, adding that about a 1000 people had taken refuge at the Nandigram police station.

A huge police contingent had been deployed at the Tekhali bridge to control the situation.

An investigation was on to ascertain whether Maoist ultras were involved in the explosion, the SP added.
