AP to go ahead with Palar dam construction

Tirupati, Nov 5 (UNI) Tamil Nadu's opposition notwithstanding, the Andhra Pradesh government will go ahead with the Palar river dam construction work near Kuppam in Chittoor district from next month.

According to official sources here today, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was likely to lay the foundation stone for the Palar dam works on December 5.

The Tamil Nadu Government, which had been voicing concern over Palar has filed a petition in the Supreme Court.

Palar flows for about 70 km in Karnataka and 30 km in Andhra Pradesh before flowing into Tamil Nadu. It is a major drinking water source for three districts in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh has claimed that the river was major irrigation source for Chitoor district, besides providing drinking water for many of its towns.
