Nepalese Parliament passes proposal on proclamation of republic

Kathmandu, Nov 4 (UNI) Nepalese Parliament today approved the proposal on the proclamation of a Republic in the country.

The amendment proposal on a Republic tabled by the CPN-UML was supported by the MPs of the leftist parties by Voice vote. The Proposal requires the approval of two- third majority of the Parliament to implement. Nepali Congress has proposed to implement on the first meeting of the Parliament after the election of Constituent Assembly(CA) which is opposed by Maoists.

The Parliament also approved the Maoists' proposal on a fully proportional representation electoral system. Nepali Congress oppose both the motion. The House passed the motions through voice vote after major left parties, including the CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist, the People's Front Nepal, the CPN-Unified and the United Left Front decided to support a motion each tabled by the UML and the Maoists.

On October 15, the UML had registered two motions in the Parliament saying that the country be declared a Republic after the Constituent Assembly elections and that the elections be held on a proportional representation basis, a demand that the Maoists have been insisting of lately. The UML's amendment proposal also called for preparing the foundation for the declaration of a Republic.

Earlier, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) withdrew its proposal on a Republic and the CPN-UML withdrew its amendment proposal on a fully proportional electoral system.

The meeting between the top leaders of the seven parties held this morning at PM's official residence at Baluwatar to forge an agreement on the issue of the Republic also ended inconclusively, the leaders of the major left parties have gathered at the UML parliamentary party office to explore the possibility for the success of their motions.
