Free clothes for SC, BC during Pongal

Puducherry, Nov 3 The Puducherry administration will provide free clothes to the SC and BC communities for Pongal instead of Deepavali this year, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy said here today.

Talking to newspersons Mr Kandasamy said the administration had decided to provide polyester clothes from this year. In the wake of objections, a committee of legislators was constituted to look into it. The committee, after a meeting on Nov 2, recommended to purchase handloom clothes also for free distribution.

Hence, two sets of clothes--one each of polyster and handloom-- would be doled out to the beneficiaries.

Delay in finalising tender for the procurement of polyester clothes, altered the 'season' of distribution, he said adding it would be during Deepavali from the next year.
