Villagers lay siege to police station

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 31 (UNI) Tension prevailed for about an hour when a section villagers of Sukkampatti near Manapparai laid a siege to Puthanatham Police Station, near here, today protesting the alleged ill-treatment meted out to their village head by the police.

Police said there was a misunderstanding between two groups of villagers over a land dispute.

On a complaint, police took Village Head Krishnan and others to the police station yesterday where they were allegedly beaten up by the men in uniform.

The villagers also resorted road roko due to which vehicular traffic on the Manapparai-Madurai Highway came to a grinding halt.

On information, Superintendent of Police N Rajasekaran rushed to the spot and pacified the agitated villagers.

Mr Rajasekaran told UNI cases had been registered against a few villagers for obstructing traffic.

Suitable action would be taken against erring policemen after a detailed enquiry was held.
