No permission needed for new dam: Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31 (UNI) Kerala today said it did not require permission from any other state for constructing a new dam in its territory.

There was no need for getting permission from any neighbouring state for constructing a dam here, State Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran said in reply to Tamil Nadu's assertion that it would not permit Kerala to construct a new dam near the existing and more than a century-old, Mullaiperiyar Dam.

Moreover, there was no justification in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's statement on the issue, he said.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu said it would not permit the Kerala Government's reported move to construct the new dam and insist on the Centre not to allow Kerala to go ahead with the project.
