Lawyers 'assault' judge in court hall

Chennai, Oct 31 (UNI) A Metropolitan Magistrate court judge was allegedly assaulted by lawyers in a court hall, after a melee, when he denied bail in a case for the third successive day today.

After the incident that took place in the Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate court in Egmore, judge Muruganandam lodged a complaint with the High Court Registrar, demanding action against the lawyers, who assaulted him.

Police said a verbal duel broke out in the court when Advocate Elangovan questioned the judge as why he was denying bail to his client. Soon there was a melee and the judge was allegedly assaulted.

While the judge lodged a complaint with the High Court Registrar, a group of advocates led by Mr Elangovan petitioned the Chief Justice, demanding action against the Judge.

The Chief Justice assured the advocates that he would take action after hearing both the sides.
