Five get life terms for abducting businessman

New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) Five people, including a woman, were today sentenced to life terms and fined Rs 14,000 by the Rohini court in connection with the kidnapping of a businessman.

The five people sentenced to life are Kiran (38), Ramroop (29), Surjeet (25), Jitendra (36) and Surendra (38).

Sanjiv Batra, a businessman, was kidnapped on February 9, 1998, while he was on his way to his factory in Haryana. He was in his car along with his driver, when three people intercepted them and hijacked the vehicle.

Batra was also carrying cash of Rs 8 lakh with him. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs two crore from his wife, Sangeeta Batra, who lodged an FIR in the Model Town police station.

The case was later given to the Crime Branch, which arrested the three kidnappers and their four accomplices, including a woman. The cash, which Sanjiv was carrying, was also recovered from them.

Out of the seven people involved in the case, one person has died and one person has been acquitted due to lack of evidence by Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar.
