Strike: Govt offices affted in UT

Functioning
of
the
Central
and
State
Government
offices
in
the
Union
Territory
(UT)
of
Puducherry
was
badly
affected
following
the
nationwide
strike
by
the
employees
and
teachers
to
press
their
demands.
They were demanding provision of interim relief, revamping of the new pension scheme, lifting the ban on recruitment and contract appointments, among other things.
Major trade unions, including the CITU, have extended their support to the strike.
The Confederation of Puducherry State Government Employees Associations led by Balamohanan and the Government Employees Association spearheaded by Seshachalam jointly organised procession and staged a demonstration in front of the Nehru statue here. Other small associations affiliated to major trade unions reached there by taking out separate processions.
Members of the State Government Employees Central Federation led by Latchumanasamy went on a mass casual leave and staged a demonstration before the Chief Secretariat here.
With the participation of more than 6,000 teachers in the agitation, functioning of the government schools were affected.
Functioning of the centrally administered JIPMER hospital and Government General Hospital were also affected as the employees struck work and held demonstrations in front of the hospitals.
Wotk in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and post offices were affected due to the strike.
