Pandemonium in NMC after councillor tries to 'commit suicide'

Nagpur, Oct 30 (UNI) Opposition members resorted to sloganeering and damaged furniture and fixtures after one of them tried to ''commit suicide'' to protest over the alleged shortage of drinking water in several areas of the city, in a meeting of the general body of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) here today.

Pandemonium broke loose after the member, identified as Anil Waghmare (Congress), rushed to the well of the House voicing his protest, and doused himself with kerosene, shouting that he would immolate himself, official sources said.

Other members of the opposition then rushed to the well raising slogans, sources said.

The members uprooted the mikes and threw around the papers on the desk of Mayor Maya Iwnate, who was presiding over the meeting.

Ms Iwnate then adjourned the House, after which the opposition members uprooted mikes, threw around chairs and papers, and broke furniture in the meeting hall. They later forced the officials in the hall to leave, sources said.
