Hyderabad, Oct 30 (UNI) Union Home Minister Shivraj V Patil today urged young IPS probationers to fully prepare themselves to shoulder new challenges facing the country of continental dimensions.

After inspecting the Dikshant parade by 59th batch of IPS probationers of the premier the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here, he said, ''police forces across the world continue to face an increasing complex environment.

New security threats have come to the fore, bringing in new challenges.'' ''In this large, diverse country of continental dimensions, undergoing social, economic and political change, your job is even more challenging,'' he told the IPS probationers.

Stressing the need for adopting community policing he said ''the relationship between police and public will be reinforced by young officers passing out today.'' Pointing out that public expected immediate solution to all their problems, he urged the probationers to be proactive and change the perception that the police was always reactive.

Calling for strengthening of intelligence and investigation, the Minister observed that high level of expertise was needed to tackle areas such as traffic and crowd management, and organised crimes.

No development could take place without the ''canvas of well-maintained law and order'', he said urging police to protect law and respect human rights.

Earlier, Academy Director G S Rajagopal said all police training institutions in the country were networked through 'potnet', a web-based police training network, to share training resources, experiences and innovative practices and further help the cause of police training.

The academy had so far trained 4,100 directly-recruited IPS officers.
