Sunil Kumar becomes the lone Indian standing, six others lose

Gulbarga, Oct 24 (UNI) It was a black day for Indians as Sunil Kumar Sipeya became the lone man to enter quarterfinals while other six Indians lost tamely in the second round of the 15000 Dollar Gulbarga Open ITF men's Tennis tournament here today.

Eighth seed Sunil Kumar defeated compatriot Vijay Kannan 6-1, 6-3 to storm into the last eight, while unseeded players Ajay Selvaraj, Ashutosh Singh, Tushar Liberhan, Vivek Shokeen, Aditya Medkekar and Paurav Raja lost tamely.

Top seed Poval Cervenak stormed into the quarterfinals defeating Aditya 6-2, 6-4. Earlier, he completed formalities of the first round encounter defeating Roy Rupesh 7-6(4), 6-3. The match was abandoned half way yesterday.

The others who made it to the quarters with easy second round wins today were second seed Rainer Eitzinger of Austria, third seed Ivan Cerovic of Crovatia, fourth seed Dekel Valtzer of Israel and seventh seed Marek Semjan of Slovakia.

Second round: 6-Alexey Kedryuk (Kaz) bt Ajay Selvaraj 6-0, 6-1; 2-Rainer Eitzinger bt Robert Belak (Srb) 6-1, 6-2; 4-Dekel Valtzer (Isr) bt Ashutosh Singh 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1), 3-Ivan Cerovic (cro) bt Tushar Liberhan 6-1, 6-2; 7-Marek Semjan (Svk) bt Vivek Shokeen 3-6, 6-4, 6-4; 1-P Cervank bt Aditya Madkekar 6-4, 6-2, 8-S Sipaeya bt V Kannan 6-1, 6-3; Philip Oswald (Aut) bt P Raja 6-3, 6-3.
