Row over loud volume of TV claims life

Chennai, Oct 24 (UNI) A construction worker died here today after he was attacked by a group of fellow workers following a wordy duel over the volume of television at suburban Pallikaranai last night.

The worker, identified as Murugan, hailed from Chenji in Thiruvannamalai district.

Police said a group of workers, both from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, engaged in residential construction here, were staying in separate tents when the group from Andhra Pradesh raised the volume of the TV while watching a programme last night. The Tamil Nadu group objected to this and wanted them to reduce the volume.

A wordy duel ensued, which resulted in a clash and fisticuffs.

In the melee, the group from Andhra Pradesh attached the other group with stones and bricks.

Three people--Murugan, Velmurugan and Elumalai--sustained injuries and were discharged after treatment at a private hospital late last night.

However, Murugan developed complications this morning and was rushed to the Government General Hospital where he was declared dead.

Police has taken seven people, including three women, from the Andhra Pradesh group into custody for interrogation.
