Migratory birds flocking to Kolleru lake
Machilipatnam, Oct 24 (UNI) Migratory birds have started flocking to the world famous Kolleru fresh water lake in Krishna and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, according to the Kolleru Wildlife Management Wing here today.
Divisional Forest Officer G Niranjan told UNI that some painted storks from South Africa will also be sighted in the lake by the end of this month. A large number of birds from Syberia and Australia were also expected to visit the lake during this period.
Thousands of residential birds were flying to safer places around the lake area, yielding space to the migratory birds, he said.
The forest department has also planted 5,000 trees in the surrounding areas of the lake, he added.
Poaching in the lake was strictly curbed last year. No cases had been reported so far and the department had already taken preventive steps to curb hunting this year also, Mr Niranjan added.
