New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) Union Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu has approved a sum of Rs 471.14 lakh for road improvement works in Tamil Nadu.

An amount of Rs 275.73 lakh has been approved for improvement of Riding Quality (RQ) work between Kurmba Palayam and Kunnathur in Erode district on NH-209, connecting the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

This is an important road passing through the cotton city of Coimbatore and the popular pilgrimage centres Palani and Bannari.

Since it provides the shortest route for connecting Coimbatore with Mysore and Bangalore, vehicular traffic is very heavy.

''Due to the heavy volume of traffic and heavy rainfall during the recent monsoon season, the existing pavement has become dilapidated and a large number of potholes have also developed.

Hence, in order to protect the pavement from further damages, it was thought necessary to improve the stretch,'' a ministry note said.

Mr Baalu also approved an amount of Rs 195.41 lakh for improvement of Riding Quality work on another stretch on NH-209 between Nallur and Vinnappally in Erode district.

This is also an important road as it connects several agricultural, industrial, tourist, textile and pilgrimage centers in its vicinity. A large number have developed in the stretch under the impact of heavy rains during the last monsoon.

Hence, it was considered necessary to improve the riding quality of this road, the statement said.
