AP Govt mulls restriction on use of Palm oil

Hyderabad, Oct 24 (UNI) Taking a cue from Kerala, the Andhra Pradesh Government is contemplating to ''restrict'' use of Palm oil by people in a bid to check the falling prices of groundnut oil in the market.

Addressing the press here, Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy said the government was concerned over the fall in the price of groundnut oil from Rs 70 per kg till recently to Rs 62 per kg now now.

On the other hand, the price of Palm oil had gone up from Rs 45 per kg to Rs 47.

A team of officials would be sent to Kerala shortly to study the measures adopted by that state to reduce Palm oil consumption by people to arrest the drastic fall in the price of coconut oil, he said.

While people in Rayalaseema and Telangana preferred groundnut oil for consumption, those in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, particularly middle and low income groups, opted for Palm oil, he noted.
