Madurai, Oct 23: Tension gripped Avaniyapuram area in the city after a statue of B R Ambedkar was desecrated here today.
A large number of Dalits and various Dalit organisations resorted to a road blockade in the area. Some miscreants pelted tones at passing vehicles, damaging the wind screens of three Government buses, a school van, a mini-busand an autorickshaw.
Eyewitnesses said a few school students were injured in the stone-pelting.
Superintendent of Police T S Anbu along with additional police force rushed to the spot and arrested at least 120 agitators.
Vehicular traffic was disrupted for nearly two hours and bus services were cancelled in the area due to the tense situation.
However, vehicular traffic was later resumed with police protection. talking to the sources, Mr Anbu said the situation was now under control.
Police pickets were posted in and around Avaniyapuram and at vulnerable points to prevent any untoward incident. Patrolling as also intensified.
Police has launched a massive manhunt to nab the criminals.
