Thailand urges caution in imposing sanctions on Myanmar
Bangkok,
Oct
23:
Thailand
has
urged
caution
in
imposing
international
sanctions
against
Myanmar,
indicating
that
these
could
adversely
affect
it
too.
Thai Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram told visiting Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Gianni Vernettti that Bangkok fully supports the United Nations" attempts to mediate between the military rulers of Naypyitaw and Myanmar"s popular pro-democracy movement.
''However, Thailand"s role to promote a peaceful resolution in Myanmar must be carefully addressed since Thailand is Myanmar"s next door neighbour,'' Mr Nitya was quoted as saying in a foreign ministry press statement today.
''The strong measures imposed upon Myanmar would therefore affect Thailand as well,'' the Thai foreign minister added.
The Italian minister paid a courtesy call on the Thai foreign minister here yesterday to discuss the political situation in Myanmar.
