Govt decides to demolish unsafe tenements

Chennai, Oct 23 (UNI) After the collapse of a housing board tenement in Coimbatore recently, which killed 12 people, the Tamil Nadu government today decided to demolish all the unsafe housing and slum clearance tenements and build new tenements.

A high-level meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and attended by Housing Minister I Periyasamy and other officials, decided to demolish all the unsafe tenements within a month and build new tenements, using modern technology within a year.

It was also decided to evacuate the families living in these unsafe buildings and give them a financial assistance of Rs 8,000 each to help them settle in rented houses.

All those evacuated from the tenements would be given photo identity cards and they would be given flats, once the new buildings were constructed, an official release here said.
