Traffic to Thirukkanur affected due to blockade

Puducherry, Oct 22: Traffic to Thirukkanur was affected for one-hour this morning as the villagers of Vazhudavur put up a road blockade on the Vazhadavur-Thirukkanur Road to press their demands.

They were demanding immediate police action to prevent the illegal sand quarrying from the river Sankarabharani near Vazhudavur. The villagers alleged that rash driving by the vehicles carrying sand was causing accidents in their area and wanted the government to take immediate action.

It may be noted that five persons, who were asleep in their house at Moolakkulam last week, were seriously injured when a tipper lorry carrying sand illegally ran into their house.

On information, police intervened and pacified the agitators assuring them proper action to redress their grievances following which they called-off their agitation.
