Idol desecrated, one arrested

Gorakhpur, Oct 22 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Gagha area of this district this evening, when some anti-social elements allegedly desecrated an idol in a temple.

Later, an irate mob staged a demonstration to protest against the incident and blocked the movement of traffic.

One miscreant had been arrested in this regard.

SSP R K Rai said around 1900 hrs, three motorcycle-borne youth reached a Goddess Durga temple on Varanasi-Gorakhpur highway and one of them started to damage the idol.

When temple priest Raghuvansh Tiwari objected, the assailant wounded him with a knife.

However, two of them fled the scene, when people started to assemble on the spot on hearing the priest's cries.

The arrested person was said to be deranged.

Investigations were on.
