Mayawati says committed to rid UP of criminals

Lucknow, Oct 21 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today said her government was committed to rid the society of criminals.

Addressing a function on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day here, Ms Mayawati also announced a budget of Rs 164 crore towards the welfare schemes for the state police.

''No stone would be left unturned for the well-being of the police force in UP.'' She further underlined her government's motto 'Sarvajan Hitai, sarvajan sukhai' (welfare of all, happiness of all).

The CM called upon the UP Police for making valuable contribution to this end and nurturing a fearless society.

''The police has to work tirelessly, zealously and virtuously to maintain internal security in UP,'' she added.

The CM informed that the work for modernisation of the state police was on and all the police stations were being computerised.

The CM also paid homage to martyred policemen and felicitated their family.

Till September 1 this year, a total of 711 policemen had laid down their lives on the call of duty all over the country.

UP alone accounted for 134 out of 711, including a DSP, 2 inspectors, 13 sub inspectors, 15 head constables, a head operator, 96 constables and 6 police drivers.
