KDI demands stringent punishment for kidney transplant racketeers

Mumbai, Oct 19 (UNI) The Kidney Foundation of India (KDI), an organisation that deals with legal human organ transplants, wants the Government to intervene in the recent human organ transplant racket and punish the people involved in it as soon as possible.

KDI is also demanding more transplant co-ordinators and counselors in hospitals as there are only five counselors in the 25 odd registered human organ transplant hospitals.

The Mumbai Crime Branch had recently unearthed a kidney transplant racket spanning many cities.

KDI Chairman Nana Chudasama today said, ''The organ transplant racket is very big in the country and many reputed doctors and hospitals are involved in it.'' ''According to law, only legal relatives like children, parents and siblings can donate organs a to patient,'' KDI Secretary Dr V N Acharya said.

Dr Acharya further added that the law is strict for people involved in human transplant racket and should be implemented.
