Flood affects life in Manipur, thousands displaced

Imphal, Oct 19: Floods continued to affect life in Manipur for the third consecutive day today, despite a noticeable improvement in weather conditions.

The water level in the rivers have fallen by about two metres.

However, thousands of people had been displaced by the flood.

Casualty due to floods was so far two. Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) officials said a large number of people and officials were trying to stop the water from flowing into residential areas. Furthermore, a major breach of embankment had occurred in Imphal river.

Thousands of people had been affected in Kiyamgei, official sources here said. Officials have confirmed that efforts to reconstruct the embankments were on near Imphal river and sand bags had also been positioned behind bamboo walls to stop the flood waters from entering the city. The Manipur University at Canchipur continued to be flooded and msny schools and government offices also remained closed in Imphal East.

Diversion of flood waters was also done leading to flooding of agricultural land, officials said. It is estimated that about 25,000 households may be affected by the flood.

Assam Rifles troops have also rescued over 700 people from the flood-affected areas at Canchipur, the AR PRO said. The rescued people, included 170 school children from Imphal Public School, the PRO informed while adding that they have been further provided with clean drinking water and medical assistance.

Since the rainfall had stopped, the water level in the rivers have decreased. The water level of Imphal, Nambul and Iril rivers had decreased by about two metres.
