B'desh storm kills 9, injures 200

Dhaka, Oct 16 (UNI) A violent storm that swept over Bangladesh's south and south-eastern coastal belt yesterday and today left nine people killed and about 200 others injured.

Besides, over 100 fishermen with 18 trawlers went missing in the Bay of Bengal during the inclement weather caused by the influence of a low.

The storm, triggered by a land depression, also destroyed hundreds of thatched houses, damaged crops and uprooted innumerable trees.

The deaths were reported from Bhola, Bagerhat, Noakhali, Munshiganj and Rangamati. House collapse, landslide and fallen tree caused the deaths.

Coastguards were conducting drives in the Bay to rescue the missing fishermen.

Thousands of trees were uprooted during the storm that disrupted road communication on different routes for 11 hours till 0400 hrs today.

Electricity supply remained snapped in different areas as electric poles were uprooted and wires torn.
