Mumbai, Oct 15 (UNI) Supporters of ousted Thane District Congress Balkrishna Poornekar today virtually gheraoed AICC general secretary Margaret Alva and MPCC president Prabha Rau and shouted slogans against them.

The supporters had gathered at the Sahaydri Guest House in South Mumbai where both Mrs Alva and Mrs Rau were attending the co-ordination committee meeting of the Congress and NCP.

Though Mr Poornekar himself was not present, his supporters, led by Manoj Shinde, a corporator in Thane and K Vrushali, attempted to create a ruckus. They demanded that they be let inside to meet the leaders.

They shouted slogans in favour of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and against Mrs Rau and Mrs Alva. Both of them left the venue without meeting the group. They had to be whisked away by party office-bearers and police officials present.

Mr Poornekar's supporters were not happy with his replacement Kanti Koli, a former MLA. Mr Koli was considered close to Mrs Rau.

Congress sources said there had been a long pending demand to remove Mr Poornekar from his post as there were complaints against him.

Meanwhile, sources said the Congress-NCP co-ordination committee discussed the issues facing the state government like power shortage, farmers' suicides, increasing irrigation potential, among other things.

Sources said since the prospects of a mid-term poll had diminished at least for the time being, the discussions were not political in nature. But, both parties agreed that efforts should be taken not to speak against each other in public.

''It was a healthy discussion and the issues facing the state and how the government could work towards resolving pressing problems,'' sources added.
