Dhaka, Oct 14: Millions in Bangladesh today prayed for the nation's peace, progress and unity of the Muslim 'ummah' (community) on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr amidst mirth and enthusiasm.

The main congregation was held at national Eidgah this morning where President Prof Iajuddin Ahmed, Chief Advisor Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed and Speaker Zamiruddin Sircar among others offered prayers at the end of the holy month of Ramzan.

The biggest gathering was held at Solakia Eidgah in northern district of Kishoreganj where thousands of Muslims offered prayers seeking divine blessings, peace and progress for the country.

Morning rains, however, marred the festivities at some places.

In Dhaka central jail, a special Jamaat was held for VIP prisoners arrested during the crackdown on corruption. Some 45 VIP prisoners, including former ministers, MPs and businessmen offered prayer.

Former Law Minister Barrister Maudud Ahmed, former Communications Minister Barrister Nazmul Huda and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's eldest son Tarique Rahman attended the Eid Namaz.

Two detained former Prime Ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina observed the festival in seclusion in makeshift jail in Parliament building complex. They were arrested on charges of extortion and corruption.

Some 6,000 police and elite force Rapid Action Battalion were deployed for smooth Eid celebration, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims.
