AI to launch signature campaign against death penalty

Kochi, Oct 11 (UNI) Human rights organisation Amnesty International is to launch a signature drive here tomorrow as part of its worldwide campaign for a ban on the death penalty.

Amnesty International India's Kerala Coordinator P J Josy said the organisation was aiming to collect 25,000 signatures from all over the country and present them to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on October 18.

Describing India, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, as the ''land of ahimsa'', Mr Josy said AI was also mobilising world opinion to persuade the United Nations General Assembly to declare a global mortatorium on death penalty.
