Teacher's alertness averts major tragedy

Phagwara, Oct 10 (UNI) A young school teacher averted a major tragedy in Phillaur when the driver of a private school bus carrying students, fell unconscious behind the wheel in the middle of a busy road.

According to reports, a bus loaded with 35 school children and one teacher on its way to St Joseph Convent School yesterday morning, went out of control in middle of a busy road last morning when the driver, apparently an epilepsy patient, fell uncounscious.

As the bus began moving in a zig-zag manner, the students statred yelling. Jyotsana Dhiman rushed to the driver's seat and attempted to take control of the steering wheel.

However, when the bus continued to veer from one side to the other, Jyotsana switched off the engine.

The bus came to a final halt near a speed breaker. After calming down the children, Jyotsana sought help for the sick driver.

Phillaur SDM Pritam Singh today said Jyotana Dhiman managed to avert a major accident involving school students on a busy town road and would be suitably rewarded by the administration.

The SDM said he has ordered an enquiry to find out the cause and circumstances in which an ill driver was appointed by the school.
