Chandigarh, Oct 9 (UNI) Hailing the recent announcement of Haryana Chief Minister to give free plots to Scheduled Caste, Backward class and poor families, Power Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala today said the scheme would cover over 40 per cent population of the state.

Talking to reporters here, he said the Scheduled Castes comprised over 41 lakh of the total 2.50 crore population of the state.

''The Backward Classes have a bigger population than the SCs in the state and coupled with the economically weaker sections, the number of beneficiaries would go up to 40 to 45 per cent of the population,'' he added.

By making this annoncement at the Bijli rally in Jhajjar on October seven in the presence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Chief Minister had fulfilled the promise made in the Congress manifesto in the last assembly elections, Mr Surjewala said.

He also hailed the other announcements made at the rally and said the Congress had proved that it was the party which worked for the welfare of the poor people.

When his attention was drawn to the criticism of the Bijli rally by INLD leader Ajay Singh Chautala and suspended Congress MP Kuldeep Bishnoi, Mr Surjewala said those who found this rally ''irrelevant'' were not the ''well-wishers of the people but their enemies.'' UNI
