Cabinet approves continuity of rural electrification programme

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved the continuation of the rural electrification project for the Eleventh Plan for which Rs 28,000 crores had been allocated by the Planning Commission for its first phase.

The scheme will light up one lakh villages and 2.34 crore households in the first phase and the remaining will be electrified by 2012. Called the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkaran Yojana (RGGVY), the scheme currently has 235 ongoing projects.

The scheme started in 2005 has electrified 9,819 during 2005-06 and 28,706 in 2006-07 besides intensive electrification of around 12,000 electrified villages in these two years.

In 2007-08, so far 4,467 unelectrified villages have been electrified and 7,708 electrified villages have been intensively electrified. Also, since the introduction of the scheme in April, 2005, 13 lakh free electricity connections were released to those below poverty line (BPL).

According to the implementing agencies, electrification work has been carried out in 62,554 villages including 42,992 un-electrified and 19,585 electrified villages up to 17 August, 2007, under RGGVY and Rs400 crore has been released during 2007-08 so far.
