33 people feared drowned in Meghna river

Dhaka, Oct 8 (UNI) At least 33 people were feared drowned as a boat sank in the Meghna river in the rough weather in central Bangladesh today.

Police said an engine-propelled boat, carrying 50 passengers, sailed from Raipura thana ferry terminal but it soon was caught in a storm and capsized in Raipura sub-district of Narsingdi district.

Police Sub-Inspector Toriqul Islami said some 33 people went missing. It was feared that all the missing people had drowned since they could not be traced after hours, but only two bodies were recovered.

The weather across the country including capital Dhaka was rough caused by torrential rains coupled with gusty winds following a low depression area in the Bay of Bengal.

Another report said one fisherman died and three others went missing as eight trawlers capsized in southern Meghna river in Barisal district Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Rubel, 15.
